Stainless steel is an alloy of iron with a minimum of 10% chromium. The chromium allows for a thin layer of oxide on the outside of the steel. This layer is known as the passive layer, and it is due to this layer that surface corrosion can be reduced. Increasing the amount of chromium further will give an increased resistance to corrosion. Stainless steel may also contain variable amounts of Silicon, Carbon and Manganese. Other elements such as Molybdenum and Nickel may be added to add other useful properties such as an enhanced formability and even further increased corrosion resistance.
